University Institute

Biomaterials and Biocomposites

Educational goals

The program of study Biomaterials and Biocomposites is aimed at research and development of the technologies with controlled interactions with living organisms/objects. This program is focused on technologies of the materials preparation, modifications (both surface and bulk) and determination of the interactions with living systems. It includes issues of materials for both medical and other applications (e.g. advanced materials for agriculture and other technical fields and materials based on renewable resources). The study program Biomaterials and Biocomposites develops knowledge of materials engineering, biological and physico-chemical disciplines. It ensures deep understanding of structural material analysis with respect to their interactions with living organisms and applicability in practise.

Connection to other degree programmes

The doctoral study programme Biomaterials and Biocomposites is a successor to the university-wide doctoral study programme P3924 Material Sciences and Engineering 3942V006 Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials, which was taught as part of the study programme of the same name P3972 Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials and which was accredited in 2016 with validity until 31 August 2020. The study programme partially follows on from the master's study fields Polymer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Environmental Protection Engineering (program: N2808 Chemistry and Materials Technology) and the field Technology of Detergent Fats and Cosmetics (programme: N2901 Chemistry and Food Technology) and the Chemistry and Materials Technology, study course Polymer Engineering course accredited in English.

Admission requirements

Graduates who have successfully completed their university education at the Master´s degree level and have fulfilled requirements for admission procedure may be accepted for a Ph.D. programme. Their education must be compatible with the Biomaterials and Biocomposites programme in terms of content. A master's degree in the field of natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology) or an engineering education in the field of technical sciences focused on chemistry and material technology, biotechnology, pharmacy, etc. is expected. Requirements for admission are regulated by Directive on Publicly Announced Admission Procedure for Doctoral Programmes in the English Language, Accredited at Tomas Bata University in Zlin.

Graduate profile

A graduate of the study programme Biomaterials and Biocomposites will be profiled as an expert capable of independent scientific research and creative activity in the research, development, preparation, characterization and technology of materials intended for biomedicine and environmental applications, which require specific properties suitable for interactions with living systems/objects. He will be thoroughly familiar with the connections between the structure, composition of the material and its material and processing properties with an emphasis on in vivo use. He will be able to further develop and apply this knowledge in a creative way. In addition to knowledge of technologies and materials, the graduate will be equipped with practical knowledge of experimental methods of characterization and analysis of materials, both in the field of physico-chemical and material, as well as biological properties.

Expected career prospects

Graduates of this programme will find a wide range of applications in technology companies, research and development (such as universities, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Technology Parks, Technology Transfer Centres, Applied Research Centres, Research and Development Centres, Technology Centres, and others), in certification institutes in the positions of managers, project managers and independent researchers, especially in leading positions in research and development departments in production organizations dealing with advanced biomaterials and related segments.
