Educational goals

This proposed programme aims to provide advanced education and research activities for doctoral students focused on a specific field of chemistry and/or environmental protection technology. With the intensive development of industry, agriculture, transport, medicine and other fields, there is a constant impact on the environment, considering the production of waste and wastewater or the release of undesirable substances into the air, rock environment or water. The study programme provides a thorough analysis of the latest scientific literature and intensive experimental activities of such a level that will ensure the application of results in the international scientific environment and that will allow their practical application in real conditions. The goal of the study is to improve environmental protection including a rational approach to the use of natural resources, as tools for the sustainable development of modern society and the gradual transition to a circular economy. The study programme is based on knowledge of chemistry, chemical technology, physical and analytical chemistry, and in relevant cases also on knowledge of other engineering and biological disciplines, so as to affect the complex multidisciplinary nature of the issues. Typical topics of the study programme include waste utilization, its treatment and minimization, chemical and biological wastewater treatment, chemical and biological transformations taking place in wastewater, surface or groundwater, soil, rock environment and industrial processes, as well as degradation and removal of contaminants as well as the area of ??research of the occurrence of contaminants in the environment, including the use and development of analytical methods for their determination.

Connection to other degree programmes

The doctoral study programme Environmental Chemistry and Technology follows on the master's study programme Environmental Engineering and the bachelor's study programme Materials and Technologies (with a specialization in Environmental Protection).

Admission requirements

Graduates who have successfully completed their university education at the Master´s degree level and have fulfilled requirements for admission procedure may be accepted for a Ph.D. programme. Their education must be compatible with the Environmental Chemistry and Technology programme. Studies of international students and students that are citizens of the Czech Republic in the degree programmes taught in a foreign language at TBU in Zlín are regulated by the respective Rector's Directive Studies of International Students in Degree Programmes Accredited to Be Taught in a Foreign and in the Czech Language at TBU. Detailed conditions for admission are regulated by internal regulations of Faculty of Technology.

Graduate profile

The graduate will be able to perform independent scientific research and creative activities and will be able to apply new knowledge in solving complex problems related to the environmental protection. The graduate will be prepared for an employment in positions related to professional, especially chemical-technological form of the environmental protection and will be able to find and propose new solutions, both for the prevention and reduction of environmental damage and the elimination of already existing damage. The graduate will provide deeper understanding of the issues with an analytical approach; and thus find an employment both in the sphere of industrial production and in companies dealing with waste treatment, water treatment and purification, environmental remediation, and in analytical and testing laboratories. Graduates of doctoral studies will naturally be applicable in the field of research, development and education (Universities, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Technology Parks, Technology Transfer Centres, Applied Research Centres, Research and Development Centres, Technology Centres, and others).
