Polymer Engineering

Educational goals

The master's degree programme aims to prepare capable and creative individuals for careers in selected fields of the chemical, materials and automotive industries. Based on the latest knowledge of science and research in the field of chemistry, it expands students' knowledge of the interrelationships between molecular and supramolecular structure, physical and chemical behaviour and the resulting processing and utility properties of polymers. The emphasis is also placed on the evaluation and testing of physico-chemical properties of macromolecular substances and modeling of processing processes.

Connection to other degree programmes

The study programme Polymer Engineering follows on from the bachelor's study programme Materials and Technologies, specifically its specialization Polymer Materials and Technologies accredited at the Faculty of Technology, TBU in Zlín. Another follow-up is the doctoral degree. Students have the opportunity to continue in the doctoral study programme Technology of Macromolecular Substances at the Faculty of Technology, TBU in Zlín.

Admission requirements

One of the conditions for admission to study in a Master's programme is the due completion of study a Bachelor's programme. The rules for admissions and the conditions for admission to study are laid down in the relevant regulation issued by the Faculty of technology in compliance with the Higher Education Act.

Graduate profile

The graduate of the study programme is an expert in the field of chemistry, whose knowledge also covers selected areas of material and technological disciplines. The composition of the subjects included in the study programme enables students to deepen their knowledge in the field of applied physical chemistry and the theory of processing processes. Students also gain high-quality laboratory skills with an emphasis on knowledge of modern methods of instrumental analyses and testing of materials. The study programme places a great emphasis on graduates understanding the relationships between processing processes, structure and final properties of products made of polymeric materials. The study is designed so that its graduate is able to apply the acquired knowledge in solving new problems in the field of chemistry and can take responsibility for laboratory activities and related evaluation, presentation and publication of results and successful completion of research projects.

Expected career prospects

The competencies acquired in the studied subjects will provide graduates with opportunities to apply in chemical and materials research and development, where they can work in the functions of research and development workers. Graduates can also obtain job positions of experts and managers in appropriate types of production with the possibility of working in middle and senior management positions and thus participate in production management and support processes, such as analytical and control laboratories and quality control and management departments. Potential industrial employers are mainly companies focusing on the processing of plastics, rubbers and natural polymers. Graduates also find an employment in business and consulting organizations, development and research workplaces and state administration. The acquired education also provides a precondition for further education in doctoral study programmes.
